Run+Ride for Ride+Walk 6 and 12 Hours of Winona

What do you know a post about something other than the trails being closed.  Believe me I am very happy to not be logging in every day to post updates about that.

On August 22, KCV Cycling will be continue the tradition of trail running and 6/12 hours of mountain biking supporting the Ride+Walk Fund.  All proceeds from the event will go towards helping the communities of Warsaw and Winona Lake become even more bike friendly.

Mark it on your calendars and plan to join us for a day of competition and good times with your closest cycling (and running) friends.  More information can be found on the KCV website located here.

If you just want to register for either event click one of the links below.

It is a great event don’t miss out!

Michianan Mountain Bike Race
The Michiana Mountain Bike Race formally known as the NIMBA Race Series will be visiting Winona Lake.  All proceeds of this event go directly back to Winona Lake Trails.

More information is located on the KCV Cycling Website.  Come on out and support your local trails

Front Side of Trail is Open- Back Side Still Closed

We have opened the front side of the trails.  The back side is still closed at the main bridge that crosses Cherry Creek.  You may enter the trails from Boys City Drive or Roy Street.  DO NOT enter the trails from Pierceton Road.

We have a large tree down that has damaged the trail on the back side and we have alot of ruts and drainage to fix as well.  We will be out Friday morning to start to work on these sections.

SOAP BOX
KCV Cycling would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to trail users who pay attention to our posts and trail statuses.  However, it has come to our attention that some users think our statuses don’t apply to them, this can either be cyclists or foot traffic.  When we close the trail we do it to protect our gift of land use by the property owner.  Winona Lake Trails is not part of the Town of Winona Lake, City of Warsaw or any parks department.  It is private property, and we all get the benefits of it because of very gracious land owners.  Please respect that, as the trails can be taken away from us to never be used again.  KCV Cycling are the stewards for the trails and we have promised to keep them in tip top shape for all users.  This means occasionally closing them down.  If you know the trail is closed and you see anyone using them, please ask them politely to leave and educate them why it is harmful to be on the trails while they are closed.  If you are a regular reader of our website, you understand the basics for why they are closed when wet.

  • Riding around wet spots and widening the trail is bad and kills vegetation needed to help prevent erosion.
  • Sometimes the trails need to be closed to keep users safe from unsafe trail conditions.
  • Creating ruts, not only damages the trail, but creates unnecessary erosion.
  • Volunteers spend countless hours on the trail keeping them groomed and fixing damage done from storms.  We don’t want to fix trails from users destroying the trail.  We want to ride too and can’t because we are fixing the trails.

WINONA LAKE TRAILS UPDATE

Trails are now open for riding and hiking. With that said, please be aware of a few things…

  • The second half of Southtown Loop (east side of Greenway in the first mile) will stay closed due to dangerous limbs hanging over the trail that will be removed over the next few days.
  • Patience will now remain closed until further notice, due to Greenway construction getting ready to ramp up.
  • Many sections still need some weed eating, and over the waist/head trimming, which will continue to take place this week.
  • All sections still have a lot of leaves and small sticks down on the trail, along with some slick spots.
  • If you can help with the removal of leaves and sticks while you’re out on the trails, please do so. If you can help with weed eating and/or trimming, send an email (info@kcvcycling.org) for more details.

Thanks for the awesome crew of volunteers that have been tirelessly plugging away for the last 4 days to get the trails open. And thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding.

Damage Update

We made good headway yesterday afternoon.  The trails are still closed at this time but we are hopeful we can get them open by this weekend.  If you have any questions or would like to be part of our crew that gets the trails open we encourage you to contact us.

We will be performing a scouting mission tonight to see what we have left to do.  We post here and on the KCV Facebook page any updates.

We appreciate your patience!

Major Tree Damage – Trails Closed Until Further Notice

Due to the storms on 5-30-15 we are closing the trails until further notice.  There are trees down all over the place and we have some major rutting from the rain.  There are alot of really sloppy spots as well.

If you would like to help us out this week so we can get the trails open please contact us through the form located on our Contact us page.  We can use all the help we can get to get the trails open as soon as possible.

If you see anyone using the trails please kindly ask them to exit the trails.

Thanks,

KCV

Wonderful Weekend

10690122_10155609189690249_8655728585258647199_nThank you to everyone that came out and participated in Round 1 of the DINO Series Mountain Bike Race.

All tape and course markings are scheduled to be removed from the trails by Tuesday evening. The trail is fully open to all riders following the normal directional routes.

If you are on the trails and willing to help us remove tape, we would love your help! Tape can be disposed of in the garbage cans on the trail or Greenway. Any posts can be returned to the brown shed next to the Greenway by the burn pit.

DINO MTB Race Update

If you are planning on participating in the DINO Mountain Bike race this Saturday, you know that either side of the course could be run backwards.  This year the course will go counterclockwise (“front” side reverse, “back” side normal)

NOTE:
Front Side: South of Cherry Creek
Back Side: North of Cherry Creek
Cherry Creek runs through our trails and the only crossing point is the main bridge you can check it out on our map.

We understand that to get a feel for how the front side rides you need to pre-ride the course.  Please DO NOT do this prior to Friday.  The course will be marked late Thursday night and this will give you enough time to check it out.

On Thursday night the trail status will change from Green to Purple indicating that the trails are open to registered riders only.  DINO is a fun event, and gives you the opportunity to ride our hometown course a little differently.  You may register HERE for the race.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
